Job Interview: How to answer "List five words that describe your character"

There are hundreds of different questions asked by the employers during a job interview, but some of them are standard and should not surprise you at all. There is however this tricky question, “List five words that describe your character” that employers love to ask, but job seekers overlook the importance of this question and fail to take the time to formulate the right answers. It may sound like a simple question, but if you think about it, describing yourself in a few words and at the same time gaining your listener’s interest is not that easy.
In that case there is no wrong or right answer as long as you justify your answer well. However, you may find the advices given below helpful:



1.    Be honest
Give an honest answer, as interviewers have a lot of ways to find out if you are lying or not. If you get caught cheating, you will lose the job at the same minute. Being honest to yourself and your interviewers is the only way to get the job that best suites you. Even if you manage to get the job by lying, your true skills will sooner or later be revealed.

2.    Use always positive language
Never criticize your previous employers or yourself. Smile and be positive and answer with confidence. In that way you gain their trust and sympathy. Never act the question is stupid or funny because your employer wants you to take each question seriously. Feel free and add a little humor but take this question seriously.

3.    Associate your skills and experience with the requirements of the job
Before the interview, check the job requirements and make a list of the skills you have that match those requirements. Make sure that those skills or characteristics match the ones mentioned on your CV. Don’t talk about your personal life or experiences, but about the skills you have developed during your career and can be helpful to your future job.

4.    Be brief and specific
Be brief and specific with what you have to say, otherwise your listeners will get tired and bored. Listen to what is being said and answer only the questions asked, by giving 2-3 examples. Don’t underestimate yourself and don't start bragging about irrelevant things.

5.    Give Examples
Describe yourself using strong examples. If you are a great problem solver, merely by just saying that doesn't mean much. However, if you talk about a specific time when a big problem occurred and you were the one to save the day, you will get their full attention.
