There are hundreds of different questions asked by the
employers during a job interview, but some of them are standard and should not
surprise you at all. There is however this tricky question, “List five words
that describe your character” that employers love to ask, but job seekers
overlook the importance of this question and fail to take the time to formulate
the right answers. It may sound like a simple question, but if you think about
it, describing yourself in a few words and at the same time gaining your
listener’s interest is not that easy.
In that case there is no wrong or right answer as long
as you justify your answer well. However, you may find the advices given below
helpful:
1.
Be honest
Give an honest answer, as interviewers have a lot of
ways to find out if you are lying or not. If you get caught cheating, you will
lose the job at the same minute. Being honest to yourself and your interviewers
is the only way to get the job that best suites you. Even if you manage to get
the job by lying, your true skills will sooner or later be revealed.
2.
Use always positive language
Never criticize your previous employers or yourself.
Smile and be positive and answer with confidence. In that way you gain their
trust and sympathy. Never act the question is stupid or funny because your
employer wants you to take each question seriously. Feel free and add a little
humor but take this question seriously.
3.
Associate your skills and experience with the requirements of the job
Before the interview, check the job requirements and make
a list of the skills you have that match those requirements. Make sure that
those skills or characteristics match the ones mentioned on your CV. Don’t talk
about your personal life or experiences, but about the skills you have
developed during your career and can be helpful to your future job.
4.
Be brief and specific
Be brief and specific with what you have to say,
otherwise your listeners will get tired and bored. Listen to what is being said
and answer only the questions asked, by giving 2-3 examples. Don’t
underestimate yourself and don't start bragging about irrelevant things.
5.
Give Examples
Describe yourself using strong examples. If you are a great problem solver, merely by just
saying that doesn't mean much. However, if you talk about a specific time when
a big problem occurred and you were the one to save the day, you will get their
full attention.
Below there is a
list with some key words, you may use for answering the question:
1. Organized
2. Team Player
3. Hardworking
4. Self - Motivated
5. Creative
6. Problem solver
7. Patient
8. Positive
9. Professional
. Cooperative
Conclusion
As the competition is huge, you must find a way to stand out from the rest of the candidates by highlighting five elements of your character and skills that will convince the
employer you are the right person for the job.
